Precious Gemstones that are Made, Not Mined

Our stunning lab-grown emeralds are the ethical and affordable alternative to their earth-mined equivalents. Identical in physical, chemical, and optical properties to traditional emeralds, Charles & Colvard’s created emeralds are mindfully crafted to meet our superior standards.

These lab-created emeralds are made using scientifically advanced machinery and processes, producing strikingly green, attention-grabbing beryl gemstones. They have been hydrothermally crafted in laboratories since the mid-20th century. Lab-grown emeralds are a popular and valuable type of beryl, with other types available in many colors like yellow, red, and blue (aquamarine).

Our Promise

At Charles & Colvard, we strive to redefine the jewelry industry by using exclusively made, not mined gemstones. As we continue to prioritize superior AAA quality, hardness and durability, and ethically sourced stones, our experts forge gemstones that embody unrivaled craftsmanship and care.

Superior AAA Quality

AAA quality lab-grown emeralds are popular, rare, and valuable. Charles & Colvard crafts Conscious Color gemstones to complement our Caydia® lab-grown diamonds, ensuring Superior AAA Quality and making them the perfect and ethical addition to our fine jewelry portfolio.

Conscious Color

For nearly 30 years, Charles & Colvard has set the standard for lab-grown gemstones, focusing on creating ethically sourced stones with impeccable craftsmanship. We constantly seek to innovate the standard of beauty in fine jewelry through above-ground stones, and our Conscious Color collection does just that. We set out to demonstrate that everything we love about Rubies, Sapphires, and Emeralds, can be made consciously, in a way that we can feel good about.

Mohs Hardness

Using the Mohs scale, created emeralds rate 7.5 with fair to good toughness. Gem and mineral Mohs scale ratings are based on the relative ease or difficulty with which one mineral can be scratched by another. Emeralds are remarkably alluring gemstones and a flattering complement to other fine stones.

Emerald Care and Cleaning

With proper care and maintenance, created emeralds last for generations. However, these gemstones require meticulous attention and care.

Hardness and Toughness

Created emeralds’ 7.5 rating makes it a stone that requires more care in wearing than ruby or sapphire. Though not as tough as they are hard, created emeralds are often described as brittle, and they may be subject to damage from swift physical impact.

Stability

Special attention must be paid to created emeralds, as they are more sensitive to harsh environmental conditions. Heat can damage emeralds by extending present fractures. Light and chemicals may cause the oils, resins, and polymers used to fill surface-reaching fractures to alter the appearance of or deteriorate the gemstone.

Cleaning

Using warm, soapy water and gentle scrubbing is the safest way to clean created emeralds.

Treatment

Avoid treating created emeralds with solvents, such as alcohol, acetone, or paint thinners, as these harsh solutions may dilute or degrade the quality of the stone. Remove the emerald from its setting to make repairs that involve heat, as many pieces are susceptible to damage. Created emerald jewelry requires significantly more caution than other more durable gemstones.
